You’ve probably heard the term SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, thrown around a lot in recent years. Most people know that it has something to do with websites and search engines like Google, but don’t really know how it all works.
Think of SEO in terms of a party that you’re hosting. The venue for the party is represented by your website. Your next step is to send out the invitations. SEO is represented by those invitations. It is comprised of text called “meta content” that is embedded within the html coding (computer language) of your site. Some of the main meta elements are titles, descriptions and in some cases, keywords.
Meta titles are the labels you give each page of your site. Typically, your title should be 60 characters or less and contain words that form an accurate, high-level description of the site page.
The meta description contains words that describe the main content of each page of your site. It is important to create a description that makes sense as a small paragraph. Simply listing a bunch of keywords that don’t create complete sentences won’t gain you major SEO points. Your descriptions should be between 150 – 160 characters.
And finally, there are meta keywords. There has been a lot of debate in recent years about whether or not you actually need meta keywords anymore. The algorithms search engines used to use picked out keywords and ranked sites based on them. However, algorithms have advanced significantly and now keywords are less important. That being said, you can add them in if you wish, separating each keyword with a comma.
The meta titles, descriptions and keywords form the main components of your website SEO and will be used by search engines like Google to rank your website. Each page of your website should have unique SEO content that is relevant to the content contained on the page.
Going back to the party analogy, the SEO content is like sending invitations out to your guests telling them where the party is being held, when it will take place and what they can expect.
Another key element that will help the SEO of your website is your social media marketing. Having useful and interesting content on your various social media channels that links back to your website helps increase your credibility in the eyes of search engines. Increasing your credibility thereby increases your relevancy when someone types in a search that relates to your website and will raise your site to the top of the list.
